Ready for a game of chess? Join the Chittenden County Chess Club on Saturdays at the South Burlington Public Library! Pawn pushers strategize to better their games. Serious players of all ages are welcome. Games start at 11:00 am in the Community Room upstairs. All players must arrive by 10:45 to be assigned a game; late arrivals may not be paired. New to the group? Check in at the 2nd floor desk.

About the club

The Chittenden County Chess Club meets Saturday mornings at the library to offer the community the opportunity to play a tournament-experience game every week.

We play serious chess; casual games can be played in the Community Room from 10:30 -11:00 before chess club begins*. Participants should arrive by 10:45 to be paired for a game. Players may either participate in a USCF-rated game (USCF membership required) or a non-rated tournament game (no membership required). Because chess is a two player game, it's possible that we will not be able to find a game for every player when there is an odd number of players in the room.

Players arriving after 11:00 am will not be paired, but are welcome to silently watch games in progress. We encourage players to come back to the club if you do not find a game your first time. Club members can also be a resource for learning about other places to play chess nearby or online.

The games we play can take up to three hours to complete. Knowledge of the rules is essential and so is knowledge of how to keep score. Participants are expected to be respectful of other players by taking their time to play meaningful, thoughtful games. If you are looking for a serious chess experience, we are definitely the place to be.

Please be aware that there is no talking and no cell phone use allowed while your game is in progress.

Parents with children under 12 must remain in the library at all times.

Kids' Chess (ages 5 and up) is on hiatus. Interested in volunteering to bring this event back? Come downstairs and find a staff member in the KidSpace, we'd love to talk to you!

* Casual chess players are always welcome to bring or find a game when the library is open! A chess board and full set of playing pieces is available to borrow from our Library of Things.

The Library is ADA accessible, patrons are asked to call (802) 846-4140 in advance if special services are required.

Masks may be worn in the library and at any library program.
